Longer legs and arms can create greater stroke length, allowing a rower to apply force over more distance. A larger frame can also carry more muscle and support greater absolute aerobic capacity. The height difference at elite levels is clear, and it can influence which athletes are selected to progress.

But performance is determined by a combination of body size, metabolic ability, coordination, endurance, and technique. A tall rower still has to turn leverage into useful, sustainable power.

Raw erg scores can also exaggerate the advantage of size. A heavier rower can usually generate more power, but an erg does not penalize additional weight. On the water, that weight pushes the shell deeper and creates more drag. A lighter, shorter rower may move a boat better than an unadjusted erg score suggests.

Shorter rowers have to make the most of the length they have: a strong hip pivot instead of reaching from the lower back, immediate connection at the catch, and as little wasted movement as possible. Height may attract attention, but sustainable power, technical skill, racing, and the ability to move a boat provide stronger evidence.
